Title:

[Lois Lenski photograph collection]

Creator/Contributor:

Lenski, Lois, 1893-1974, creator, creator.

Abstract:

Snapshots, professional photographs, and copy photographs related to research for several of Lenski's regional children's books, as well as some Lenski and Covey family photographs. The collection includes one album of biographical photographs such as portraits, family portraits, and views of family homes (the earliest of which are copy photographs), as well as three albums, presumably assembled and captioned by Lenski, around specific book projects. These picture children and communities that provide background material for her books. An album labeled "Cotton in My Sack" shows cotton picking, children at work, and rural town life around Blytheville, Arkansas in 1947; "San Francisco Boy" depicts Chinese American children at play and in school groups and library book clubs in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1954-1955; album labeled "To Be a Logger" contains photographs of children, forest and logging scenes taken in Tiller, Oregon in 1967. Several folders contain snapshots mounted on pages in the manner of the albums, and contain photographs related to three short stories published in 1962 as "We live in the Southwest.". These views relate to "Ghost-Town Boy" (town views of Jerome, Arizona and views of ghost towns), "A Knife for Tomaso" (views of Truchas and Chimayo, New Mexico and Latino children), and "The Turquoise necklace" (Navaho life at Cameron, Arizona.).
